This review reveals the key elements of the scenario. If you do not want to know, please do not read further.
I attended the first presentation of the latest Star Wars (official title Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, French Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Alarm) when Star Wars marathon seven films in the series in the order of history, Episode I, II, III, etc., and not their publication. More than 15 hours of film.Rest assured, I arrived in the middle and fortunately for my sanity I avoided the first films, but it was a curious back to the future to see Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, shot in 1982, be followed immediately after his tour over 30 years later.
I should clarify that I always see movies in their original version, in this case in English, and I confess that I have never favored a translated version to the original. This means that if I did not like the original, I can not be more lenient for the translated version.
I'm not a big fan of the series, although I like the theme of science fiction (my favorite movie is 2001: A Space Odyssey) and as galactic qu'épopée I prefer Star Trek. But the Star Wars movies are filled blockbuster best special effects of the time, and as a social phenomenon, they are not to be ignored. That's why I watched the six previous films at least once and the latest for this criticism.
The first impression that struck me during this marathon is how the first three films shot had few cinematic qualities, even for the time. The plot is simplistic and riddled with inconsistencies, the science shown is downright false or fictitious when it does not challenge immutable physical laws, the dialogues are tasteless and the acting is deprecated in favor of the special effects that have not aged 2015. Their only qualities are colorful, thriving representation of these worlds of a distant galaxy (where the mysterious laws of evolution have everyone talking in English, but let's be serious, I forgive this improbability behalf simplify scenario). The multitude of races, customs and costumes is more interesting than the Shakespearean story.
For the purposes of my argument, let us recall the story of most films. The bad guys are powerful and ready to attack. Vouchers are weak, defensive, but cunning. The bad guys have a weapon that destroys planets in the prototype stage. One or planets are destroyed to show that the bad guys are serious about their destructive approach. The good and the bad use magic that is stronger on the side of good, because they are good. The weapon of the wicked, hyper defended a Achilles heel that good can exploit. Good exploit this weakness. Narrowly, they destroy the weapon of the wicked. Good win. Celebration. Credit.
Meanwhile, there are characters in the story who live their drama almost everyone regardless of the battle between the two factions. There are comic elements. There is a wise man with a philosophical message. There is the kiss of Hollywood (Hollywood kiss). There is very light erotic tension. There Freudian questions. And an analogy with Nazism.
I just actually summarize the latest film, The Force Alarm clock. I approached this film work as a film buff that I am who worships Woody Allen for Annie Hall and periodically hate for Everyone Says I Love You. Todd Haynes who considers one of the best recent filmmakers. Who qualifies Werner Herzog engineering and crazy at once. Who judges that Robert Lepage (as director) should have received the same glory that Xavier Dolan currently receives. Denis Villeneuve who perceives in a certain fetishism of women in situations of helplessness.
Review of Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Wake
Directed by JJ Abrams, the specialist reboots (Star Trek) and monster movies (Cloverfield, Super 8), he dedicates a boundless admiration for the Star Wars franchise and it shows by its almost perfect copy of the first Star Wars (Episode IV). And that's the problem, Episode VII is actually Episode IV for the new generation 2015 who was not born in 1977. Not much effort has been applied to different. Even the bar scene was repeated, perhaps the most relevant nod to one of the best scenes of the franchise.
Like I said earlier, the big story is the offensive of the wicked must be countered by the destruction of their weapon that destroys planets. This is actually a pretext to present another story at the individual level of this family torn between good and evil and backs-gods born from the union of mortals and blessed. A Greek tragedy.
The patricide I was apprehensive towards the end (I would have been pleasantly surprised otherwise) left me ice, seeing stars of a contract detail Hollywood to honor or not for future episodes VIII and IX and probably spin -offs, antépisodes Hollywood and other marketing items.
Actors Game
It is expected of a science fiction film with spectacular special effects, great vessels, large explosions and alien races diverse as each other. It was all that. But what about the acting, can one find a pleasure?
Remembering the films of the 80s, the quality of interpretation left much to be desired and fortunately Harrison Ford (Han Solo), this former carpenter, has greatly improved his game since 1982. This is revealed in the latest Star Wars though simplistic dialogues offer a chance for any player to excel. Carrie Fisher (Leia General, as princess and mother of the gods-backs) seems tired and plays a tone too mawkish given galactic issues around it. The third former actor Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker famous, my nickname for years), it has a silent role, I will not say more, but I had the impression that stole my money.
As important new players, four in number, do not predict a Benedict Cumberbatch in their rank. Although Oscar Isaac, the revelation of Inside Llewyn Davis Coen brothers has already proved his talent in a most violent year (the stunning oil tycoon storage attempting to obtain wealth by honesty). Here it is underused in the role of the invincible leader of the rebel pilots.
Black service, yes I know, it's terrible to say it, but that's what Hollywood monks found to attract customers to the black Star Wars, is a stranger named John Boyega. It offers a very physical performance and it's interesting to see it for real sweat in the desert (he really suffered during these scenes).
When the female element (big revelation of the script, do not read further), Rey, probably the daughter of Luke Skywalker (but who is the mother?) Starring Daisy Ridley is also a young unknown. In line with Katniss Everdeen (Hunger Games) and Beatrice Prior (Divergent), it embodies the strong woman, barely out of adolescence, which puts forward its resilience rather than charm. It is a new fashion in Hollywood, seems to attract a sizable female customers to the delight of those who pocket the proceeds.
The ugly Kylo Ren, descendant of Darth Vader, is a leading man, Adam Driver, we will be probably more familiar after the successful return of the franchise. Unlike Anakin that was completely disfigured, Kylo Ren is very beautiful and the script makes the mistake of unmasking once but three is to wonder what is his mask.
All these young players, probably more talented than the realization that allows them here still lack confidence and charisma. No performance stands out against the overwhelming ubiquity of action scenes and special effects. I deliberately ignores R2-D2, BB-8 and other metal bodies.
Disturbing images dot the film, like the fight on a bridge, the sound hacker style Cloverfield (a tic Abrams), Nazi demonstration outside and vulnerable enemy base at the end of a long tunnel to go. That not have cost to do different, but it seems that Hollywood hates innovations.
